WORDS BY CAYLEE ROBILLARD!
High-energy, young, and dynamic are all words that could be used to describe BROCKHAMPTON’s show in Atlanta on November 20th at The Coca-Cola Roxy. As the doors opened, the venue filled with a vibrant group of hype fans. The energy for the night was quickly set by openers, slowthai and 100 gecs. Soon, Rihanna’s Stay poured through the speakers and the six vocalists came on stage. They opened with ST. PERCY off of their most recent album GINGER.
I was asked by a friend what kind of band was BROCKHAMPTON before heading to the show, the best answer for this dynamic and incredibly talented group of guys is a ‘rapping boy band.’ Their unanswered lyricism and social relevance has set this boyband a part, and has put them in their own category.
From a mosh pit to slow songs played sitting on a couch, this show had everything a fan could have desired out of a BROCKHAMPTON show. They played an array of music from their fairly expansive discography, considering how young of a group they are. Everything from GUMMY to SUGAR made the setlist.
The production matched the level of intricacy of the performance. Lighting, smoke, and graphics all strategically set up to the beat drop and heavy verses of each song. All of this added to a performance that was driven by unmatched stage presence and vitality. The young energy was prevalent in this show, like nothing I’ve ever experienced. But, what stood out the most was the freedom. The freedom of the band on stage to sing and spit about real life, and the freedom of the crowd to be who they were at that very moment. Inclusivity and freedom are a vital part of what the modern music industry is becoming, and BROCKHAMPTON exemplify that - all while putting on one hell of a show. If you can, make sure to catch a show on the HEAVEN BELONGS TO YOU tour.
