Moon Bounce's new single, HOOK!

REPORTING BY
MARANDA RISNER

Moon Bounce will definitely bounce your mood

Image courtesy of Tell All Your Friends PR!

Within the first ten seconds of hitting play on Hook I was taken away to a different place. With my headphones in and my eyes closed I found myself vibing, on a beach, set in the late 90's.  As the song progresses Moon Bounce's rough voice comes through, the clever mix of so many different genres from R&B to dance music; the name Hook being perfect as this song HOOKS you in. Moon bounce, otherwise known as Corey Regensburg, says Hook is personal for him. He's quoted as saying, "Hook emerged from a blossoming romance between my wife and I. What started as a casual flirtation quickly became full blown infatuation."

Hook will have you smiling and dancing along, with catchy beats, and the clever hooks and bridge, this is a song that lifted my mood and has me excited for his upcoming debut LP due out February 21, 2020. He will quickly become one of your new favorite artists

Grandson: Artist Interview

GRANDSON: an artist interview

Grandson, a twenty-three year old alternative artist from Toronto, Canada, is a name you will soon become familiar with. With only four songs released, and a sound that blends hip hop, alternative, and hard rock, I was ecstatic to have the chance to interview him.

MARANDA RISNER: Can you tell me a little bit about yourself, who is grandson?
GRANDSON: I was born in New Jersey, grew up in Toronto in a family of musicians. My sisters introduced me to hiphop, R&B, dancehall, while my grandfather turned me on to jazz. I started writing on a guitar in high school, and then making beats while in University. I later dropped out of university to move to Los Angeles to write full time. Here we are now.

MR: Where did the name grandson come from?
G: I had been searching for a name that would come from a place of nostalgia; that paid respect to the people and places that my music is influenced by. The project started taking form a couple months after the passing of my grandfather; my manager had this dream one night that he was side stage at a show of mine and my name was "grandson." Once we heard it out loud, it stuck.

MR: To someone who is unfamiliar with you, how would you describe your sound?
G: I would describe it as a contemporary take on alternative rock -- blending different genres of rock I grew up on, like grunge and classic, riff-driven rock & roll with production styles of the hip hop and trap music I'm a fan of now. It’s an unapologetically 2017 take on a rock band.

MR: Is music something you've always wanted to pursue?
G: I don’t really know. It was something I always had an interest in and constantly worked at, but never saw as a realistic option until I left university.

MR: Where do you find influence when writing your lyrics?
G: I’m influenced by the places I go, the people I meet and the relationships I build. I try to be a fan and student first and foremost of both art and human behavior.

MR: Who are some of your musical influences?
G: Bill Withers, Rage Against the Machine, Danger Mouse, Eminem, Nirvana, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Beatles, Mark Ronson, Rick Rubin.

MR: When creating your songs do you do most of the production and instrumentals yourself?
G: I’m very fortunate to have collaborators like Kevin Hissink, Tim Suby, HighxLand and other super talented friends of mine that help me bring the ideas in my head to life.

MR: If you could tour with any musician you wanted to who would it be?
G: Run the Jewels.

MR: Where is somewhere you dream to play?
G: Red Rocks*

MR: So your newest single is "Best Friends" where did you find influence when writing that song?
G: The song is about this guy who was in a bad environment his whole life, and progressively his friend group gets more dangerous with the trouble they get into. He finally reaches for help and ends up escaping. At its heart, the song is about fear, morality and self-worth... nothing serious.

MR: I've seen a lot of positive feedback from your music lately, how does it feel to have it so accepted?
G: Fuckin gnarly.

MR: Can we expect an album anytime in the near future?
G: Working on it everyday. Stay tuned.

MR: As for the future, what's next for grandson?
G: New music, new shows, new stuff!!!

MR: And for the last question, I'm gonna ask what is your final quote, if there's one thing you'd like the readers to take away from this interview what would it be?
G: “How you do anything is how you do everything.”

Overall Grandson has quickly become one of my favorite up and coming artist. He has a sound that is uniquely his own and his music is one that not only tells a story, but also makes you think. Take time to check him out, I promise you will not regret it.

HTHAZE - Interview

Nimbus cover artwork courtesy of HTHAZE.

With a subscriber count of nearly 16,000 HTHaze is an up-and-coming artist that should be on your radar. Hamilton Troy Hayes, otherwise known as HTHaze online, is a 22 year old alternative artist from Dunaway, Georgia. With a sound that is all around unique, and voice that has a way of calming you, I was ecstatic to sit down and discuss his previous two EP’s and his new album with him.

Photo provided by HTHaze

- Who are your biggest influences?
- John Mayer, Jon Bellion, The 1975, Ed Sheeran, Blackbear, Japanese House. And then we got people like All Time Low, The Cab, Panic! At The Disco, The Maine, all the old school pop punk bands.

- What about them influences you?
- The way they write songs, the lyrics, because I really struggled with writing lyrics, so doing that and seeing how they wrote and how meaningful they were, it really helped.

- When was the moment you decided, okay, this music thing is something that I want to pursue?
- I don’t know if I’ve reached that moment... no I definitely have. There was a moment in my life where I was about to pack up everything and leave college and move to LA and my dad slapped the shit out of me, metaphorically, and I was like "yeah no I can’t do that." The main thing for me right now is school, it kinda has to be ya know, as for music, like I didn’t start singing until like two or three years ago, but once I started singing I was like "yo I can do this I can sing, and not just make beats." I wasn’t good at singing at first, but ya know practice makes perfect.

- Do you play multiple instruments? What is your favorite instrument to play?
- Yeah, I play a lot man, like anything other than woodwinds I can probably get down on; guitar, bass, ukulele, piano, pretty much just name stuff. I think my favorite to play would be guitar, specifically acoustic guitar, the most fun to play though is bass, it’s the one I fell in love with first.

- So I have a lot of friends who have talked about your music in the past or have mentioned how good your EP Fake Friends was, but I myself had never had the chance to sit down and listen to it, that is until I was scrolling through twitter one night and saw someone commenting on it and was like "okay, I need to check and see what all the hype is about." And let me just be honest, I am so mad it took me so long to listen. Fake Friends is truly a unique EP, it's so simple yet so intricate and when I was listening I could tell that you put a lot of passion and work into this EP, where did your inspiration come from in making EP?
- All my inspiration comes from the old shit, ya know Blink-182, All Time Low, but also a lot of the new shit I’ve been listening too. Lately, I’ve been listening to a lot of Blackbear and Eden, and a lot of 'lowfi hip-hop.' Inspiration comes from everywhere, whether it’s family, friends, other musical artists, experiences, it’s really everything.

- Did you play the instruments and produce every detail of this EP yourself?
- Yes, absolutely, I did every single bit in both of the last two EP’s.

- How was that? Was it hard producing and putting together every detail on your own?
- It was definitely interesting, just because me as a person loves to be in control of things, especially when it comes to something I’m passionate about. It has to be perfect, so no it wasn’t really hard, it was tedious when it comes to the nitty gritty, and I'm like "oh that doesn't sound right" but I don’t know how to fix it because I don't want to work with anyone. But I’ve learned from my mistakes, the new album (Nimbus) is very collaborative.

- Fake Friends is an interesting title for an EP to me, what was the inspiration in choosing that title?
- Yeah it is, uh well it is titled after the song ‘Fake Friends’ on the EP, but I guess what inspired the title was it was just the song I was most hyped about, and it kinda sums up what I was going through at the time. 'Fake Friends' is the title track but it was actually the one that was written last for the EP. And ya know it was really cool...

- My personal favorite from Fake Friends is 'Drive Me Home', funny enough, I was actually driving home late one night when I heard it the first time. I'm not sure what it was but as the song started to play everything felt surreal, it was a moment, you know?
- Yes, that was the point of me writing drive me home, that’s fucking cool.

- What is your personal favorite off of Fake Friends?
- My favorite part? Aw, gees man, uh, there’s an actual phone conversation that I had with Caulin, I was recording the vocals for Fake Friends, and he wasn’t in town. And I was on FaceTime with him, showing him the vocals, and I happened to have my mic on and so while he was talking I recorded what he was telling me and how he was doing in LA, and all of the stuff happening in his life. And so I recorded it and had that conversation feeding into the next song. I’ve always wanted to do that in my music because all the pop punk bands did that, ya know songs fading into other songs. So me actually doing that was really cool.

- Another one that I love is 'Away,' there's a lot of love in that song and it shows, was there a specific inspiration behind that track?
- I love 'Away.' It's solely about my girlfriend of six years, Angela, I love her, shout out, I love you baby! That’s pretty much all there is, though it's about her. The lyric "her eyes are like the color of the sky," yeah, if you ever see Angela her eyes are beautiful.

- Now as I said earlier, you have also released an Acoustic EP titled Friends, does it's title and the title of Fake Friends have specific meaning to them?
- Yeah, I wanted to drop the fake in front of fake friends because I’ve grown out of that chapter in my life, I’ve graduated from having fake ass friends to real ass friends. Funnily enough after I released Fake Friends I had a lot of people hit me up apologizing for being shitty, and I was like "it’s cool." And since then I’ve made more connections and more genuine friends, and so I decided to shed the fake and shine a little brighter light to it.

- What made you decide to release an acoustic version of all of the tracks from Fake Friends?
- I’ve always wanted to do that like how all the classic pop punk bands did, like Blink-182 and All Time Low. My favorite acoustic is the one from All Time Low with 'Jasey Rae,' it’s awesome. Ya know, not a lot of people did that, and I loved when bands did that because at the time all I could play was acoustic guitar so it was easy for me to learn their songs, and to me it seemed more genuine.

- Now this week you released your first Album, Nimbus, how does it feel to have released an album?
- It feels like I just threw a baseball into the moon and it shattered the moon.

- How do you think Nimbus is different from your first two EP’s?
- Nimbus is definitely more thought through. My old EPs were just whatever songs I had made at the time. Each song on Nimbus had a specific purpose for the audience. That's why there isn't a single. Every song is a single to me. Thinking like this makes me put everything I have into each tune.

- Why should people listen to Nimbus?
- There's a lot of me inside of Nimbus, these songs really do come from a different place inside of me. Listen to Nimbus if you want to learn and experience my life and how I think. Step into my shoes if you will. It also just happens to have like 8 bops too.

- You’re not currently signed, if you were approached a week from now and were offered a record deal would you sign it, or would you wanna keep doing this independently?
- No I’m not, I don’t want to be. I don’t know it really depends on the company, record companies are shifty, I have yet to find one that treats their artists well.

- If you had the chance to tour with and open for anyone who would it be?
- I was so close to opening for Blackbear, you have no idea, bruh, but it just didn’t work out. But Blackbear, or Jon Bellion, or Gnash, or Call Me Karizma, I have respect for them.

- What's next for HTHaze? Any plans of releasing more music? Any performances coming up?
- Well, Nimbus was just released, so that’s exciting. No performances, I wish, if you know anyone that needs an opener, let me know.

- Alright, that about does it, I just have one more question, if there’s one thing you want readers to take away from this article what would it be?
- Don’t sleep on me, I know a lot of people come out here "don’t sleep on me, I’m making big shit." But I’m not making big shit yet, but I promise that I will. And I promise that when these people find me in a few years are gonna be like "damn I wish I would have stuck with him" because everybody that fucks with me now is gonna be glad that they did, this is a family type thing. I’m not one of those social media people that are like "yeah y'all are my fans haha" like no, we’re family, we support each other. If I’m doing good y’all are doing good.

----

Troy (HTHaze) has quickly become one of my favorite musicians. His new album, Nimbus, is one of the best albums I have heard within the past year. Not only is he incredibly talented but he is one of the most genuine and humble guys I have ever had the chance of meeting. Give him and his music a chance, I promise you will not be disappointed.

ONE OK ROCK: AMBITIONS (REVIEW)

Ambitions. I honestly am not sure where to begin with this album. If you are not sure of what album I am referring to it is Ambitions by ONE OK ROCK, released today (13/01/2017). ONE OK ROCK is a a Japanese rock band made up of Takahiro Moriuchi (vocals), Toru Yamashita (guitar, vocals), Ryota Kohama (bass), and Tomoya Kanki (drums). They have slowly been rising throughout the states in popularity. Ambitions is their second album debut in the United States, and wow, I am trying to figure out how I can describe the beauty that is Ambitions; I feel as the only way to do this is to do a track by track review...

Takahiro - photo by Nicolette Cunningham

1) Ambitions (Introduction) - The album opens with an eerie instrumental that really sets the vibe for the entire album. In it, you can hear the sound of car doors and footsteps. This, combined with the orchestra sounds provides the perfect introduction.

2) Bombs Away - The second track to this album is encased with perfect harmonies and a bridge sent chills down my spine.

3) Taking Off - The third track is one of self recognition, knowing you are involved with someone or something is nothing but toxic for you, but not finding the strength to give it up. It’s a powerful message that shows that the love for someone or something can truly blind you. It is a powerful rock melody that will have you emotionally head banging along.

4) We Are - This song is by far my favorite song on the entire album. Upon the opening of the powerful choir I was covered in goosebumps. Half-way through I was sobbing; emotionally ruined by the powerful message of this song. This is an anthem to those who are filled with self doubt or darkness. It’s a powerful reminder that no matter how hard life may get, or how hopeless you may be -- you can get through it. And I beg of you, if you listen to only one song from this album, please listen to this one.

5) Jaded - The fifth track on the album features a favorite of many, Alex Gaskarth (vocals and guitar for All Time Low). The theme throughout this track is going for what you want, with the line “I believe in you” showing that even when you may not believe in yourself, others will believe in you. The melodious and powerful bridge joining in with a build up will motivate you to go after anything and everything you want to achieve.

6) Hard to Love - I was lucky enough to hear them perform this track live this past year while they were on tour with 5 Seconds of Summer. The track itself is written in dedication to Taka’s father and hearing it live left me teary eyed. I never expected the track itself to get better, but oh how they blew my expectations away.

7) Bedroom Warfare - Bedroom Warfare is one of my personal favorites. One of the things I love about this track specifically, is the drum beats and breakdown. It's something special and unique to the track itself, and provides the true warfare vibe to this track.

8) American Girls - Track eight is one that just makes me simply happy. It’s one that provides a happy tune and will make American girls, like myself, feel special. With the lyric: “come on break my heart you American girls, how did you get the reputation for taking over the world?”, it will make every American girl feel as if she is one of a kind.

9) I Was King - I have always been a fan of strings used in any kinds of music, so it was no surprise that this track quickly one of my favorites with the opening and use of strings throughout the track. Lyrically, it reveals how hard it can be to move on and fight the demons of the past. It shows the struggle of leaving the past behind, which is something that many of us can relate too.

10) Listen - Track ten is a catchy tune, that although upbeat, is lyrically heart breaking. It shows the struggle of watching someone you love be in pain. Lyrically it shows us just how hard it is to watch the pain and how we can only wish we could take the pain away for them. Now there is an alternate version to this song that includes Avril Lavigne, and although she does not have a solo in the U.S. version of this track, if you pay close attention you can hear her voice in the background vocals.

11) One Way Ticket - This is a track for the lovers out there; especially to the lovers who endure long distance relationships. This provide a happy beat, but lyrically shows how just how hard a long distance relationship can be.

12) Bon Voyage - "Bon Voyage" is a track that to me sounded like something you would see in a really incredible video game trailer. Its pure rock beats and instrumentals had me head banging through out the song. The instrumental breakdown towards the end was by far my favorite part of this track.

13) Start Again - The thirteenth track is one of my other favorites from this album. Lyrically, it’s empowering. The chorus: “I'm not always perfect, but I'm always myself. If you don't think I'm worth, it find someone else. I won't say I'm sorry for being who I am. Is the end a chance to start again?” provides a message of ‘if you don't like who I am, then you can leave. I will not change for you’. It's an empowering message that you should not feel as if you should change for anyone.

14) Take What You Want - The final, and second favorite track of mine, features the incredible 5 Seconds of Summer. Listening to the track I was left speechless and in awe as I heard a side of 5 Seconds of Summer that I have never heard before. The rock pureness, and raw vocals blend together perfectly with ONE OK ROCK's sound. It has me wondering: Why has 5 Seconds of Summer never done anything like this before? This track is by far better than anything 5 Seconds of Summer has ever done; and I can only hope they learn from ONE OK ROCK and take whatever it is they used in this track and put it into their next album.

Ryota- photo by Nicolette Cunningham

Overall, this entire album encompasses a pure rock sound from start to finish. Ambitions is by far one of the best albums I have heard in a very, very long time. It will leave you emotional, whether you cry real tears as I did or not, and will empower you to feel as if you can take on the world; and that whether you know them or not, ONE OK ROCK will be there cheering you on. If you’re looking for a source of motivation, I highly suggest you listen Ambitions. I promise you will not be let down.

Emarosa: Review

Emarosa: Review

Emarosa is a band that I had heard talk of but had not actually taken a moment to experience. You see, a close friend of mine had told me many months ago that I should check out their music, and maybe it’s just me, but I couldn’t help but think "what if it sucks?" I didn’t want to disappoint my friend by not enjoying their music, so I did what any other weird human being would do; I refused to listen to Emarosa. Man, do I regret that now.

Upon being offered to write this piece I was skeptical. Again, what if their music sucks? How can I do an honest piece if all I’m doing is writing negatively? But like any other adult I sucked it up, locked myself in my room, and hit play on their latest album, '131.'

Within the first thirty seconds I was stunned, cursing myself for not listening to my friend all those months ago. The first track, Hurt, had me mesmerized; the raw vocals, pure harmonies, and natural rock essence of this band is captivating; and I was hooked. And as the second track started I felt as if I were sat in a garage listening to the band myself, my surprise growing as I found the title of the song, ironically enough, to be One Car Garage. As the album progressed it only got better and better. Track eight, Never, holding the sole duet on the album, the harmonies coming together perfectly to form a heart wrenching love song that will move you. Track nine, Young Lonely, has one of my favorite lyrics on the entire album “you will find out you are strong;” leaving me with a sense that everything will be okay. And as the final track Re played I was left speechless as it tied together the entire album lyrically and musically in a phenomenal, indescribable, ending.

The entire album is powerful and moving, showing things from the struggle of battling with inner demons, to the strain those inner demons can put on a relationship, to the feeling of pure heartbreak. 131 is therapeutic in the best way, providing an escape and showing that no matter what you may be going through, you are not alone. This album is diverse in the best way possible, each song having it’s own unique tone; and as I sat in my basement, listening to 131 over and over again I couldn’t help but think, "I need to know everything about this band."

Emarosa is made up of four members: Bradley Walden, ER White, Jordan Stewart, and Matthew Marcellus. As a band, Emarosa has had many hardships and many transitions throughout their career. Lead singer Bradley Walden recalled that "originally I turned down the position in Emarosa because I knew I was walking into a situation with negativity,” the singer says, recalling the uncertain time surrounding his first release with the band, 2014’s Versus. “Facing that at first was absolutely miserable. I put a lot of pressure on myself to sound like what people wanted on Versus.” That was changed for this latest album however, “for 131, I definitely didn’t care what anybody else thought. I just wanted to make a record with my band that we all loved, and that’s definitely what we did” Walden states.

In April 2016 Emarosa announced they signed with Hopeless Records, a change from the previous record company Rise Records. In early 2016 Emarosa entered a Nashville studio with producer Casey Bates to create 131. Walden explains, “Casey was so open to everything. It was definitely the most creative vibe I’ve ever been in, and it was so inspiring, and I think that’s why the record turned out how it is. With Versus I knew in my heart it wasn’t what I wanted to do. But with 131, I’m so proud of this. It’s my favorite thing I’ve ever done. This is the record we wanted to make.”

But you see it isn’t just the music and amazing creativity behind this band that makes them fascinating to me, it is also the relationship and connection they have with their fans. I had the chance to talk with long time fan, Ashley Long, and ask her some questions as to why she loves the band so much.

Maranda: You’ve been a long time fan of Emarosa, when did you first discover their music?
Ashley:
I actually discovered them when they were still with Rise Records. I was doing some promoting for Rise and won an Emarosa prize pack with posters and CDs. After listening to their newest- at the time- album, Versus, I was hooked. I fell in love with their sound and the lyrics.

M: What was it about their music that drew you to them?
A: Initially it was because I had a free CD, but as time went on I kept listening to them because I felt this raw connection to it. Their music inspired me and I didn't want to loose that feeling.

M: As a fan, did you have high expectations for 131?
A: Waiting for their new album was torture! I would have done anything to get it earlier than I did. I had such high hopes because Versus and Versus Re-Imagined were such great albums, I knew that 131 would have to be as well.

M: Did It live up to those expectations?
A: Thankfully it did live up to my expectations, it's actually my favorite story to tell. I got the album early while working Warped Tour in Nashville, and since it’s a four hour drive back home I bought tons of new albums to listen too and 131 was one of them. I listened to the album probably like three times through and bawled like a baby driving back home.

M: What is one of your favorite songs off of 131?
A: My favorite song is Young Lonely. Something about the lyrics and how Bradley sings them gets me every time I listen to it. The first time I listened to the song I couldn't even actually make it through the whole song because it hit me like a ton of bricks. The lyrics ‘you’ll find out you are strong’ are special to me because when I heard this song it was during the time I was starting to admit to myself that I had an eating disorder and I needed help, and hearing the song made me realize that I will be okay, I will make it through this. It was a kind of fate moment. I needed to hear it at exactly that moment.

M: You’ve seen them perform live, what were those experiences like?
A: It took about two years before I was finally able to see them live. I loved the moment. I saw them two days in a row during this past summer’s Warped Tour. I worked both dates, but I wouldn't let myself miss their set. It was the one I absolutely would not miss. It was almost like listening to the album, it sounded that much alike. They all have such an awesome energy when they perform. It’s surreal because when I was watching them it was as if nothing else existed. I will never forget that experience ever again. The third time was on their first headliner this past month. It was exactly the same as Warped just less burnt skin and I was probably more emotional this time too. My favorite part of their shows is when Bradley flips Matthew while he’s still playing; and I love how Bradley literally climbs on everything including the crowd. They are so involved in their shows, it’s wonderful.

M: You’ve mentioned that Emarosa is one of your favorite bands, why is that?
A: I love them because whatever I’m feeling I can turn them on and instantly feel better. I can always relate to their lyrics and the band has been such a help inspiring me to write and create more. They’re like a little escape into my mind; I can turn them on and write a school paper or poetry and I love that they can get my creativity flowing.

M: You've met the band, what was that experience like?
A: I’ve met them three times, and each time they are as humble and nice as before. They are such sweethearts. I can tell how much this means to them. They’re also laid back and chill. Each of them had conversations with some of the crowd after the show, and during the meet and greet they left it open to just have casual conversation. Like they’re honestly one of the best group of guys ever.

M: Overall, how does their music make you feel?
A: Gosh their music makes me feel so many things. Listening to their music kind of forces you to feel something. I think their music is emotional, it feels like your heart is pouring out, you can’t belt out an Emarosa song without having some hard core emotions. But mostly I feel empowered by them. Their music makes me feel as if I can do anything, I may struggle or I may get hurt but that cant stop me from being happy and being me. Emarosa has taught me to love myself again.

                    Ashley with Emarosa.

Overall Emarosa has become one of my favorite bands in the short time I have listened to them. Their creativity and ability to touch and move you is unfounded and I highly suggest every person reading this take the time to listen to them. Do not be like me and wait, I promise you will not regret it.
